Executive member, Vereeniging Returned Soldiers' Association, 1946-1950; former Captain Maccauvlei Golf Club (1963); member Vereeniging Country Club, Vereeniging Rotary Club; Steward of Vereeniging Turf Club. Served in South African Forces during World War II as Lieutenant in Pretoria Regiment (2nd Battalion); transferred to Native Military Corps as head of Legal Section; awarded commendation. Obtained Varsity Blue (hockey captain, Grey University, 1934); was in first team rugby, hockey and swimming for Vereeniging, 1936-39. Married Joyce Katzen, 14th July, 1940; two sons.
