PATLEY, Bernard. Died 1961. Merchant and Director of Companies. He was Principal of the firm of Patlansky Bros, & Patley Universal Oil Co. Born in Neinstadt, Lithuania, in 1872, he arrived in Johannesburg in 1889 after a residence in America of two years. Married 1906, Clara Goodman, of Glasgow: two children. He was past Master of Lodge Zion, 891 S.C., and past substitute District Grand Master, Scottish Freemasonry of the Transvaal. He played a leading part in Johannesburg Jewish congregational life and at various times held office as President of the Hebrew High School; President of the United Hebrew Schools; President of the United Hebrew Congregation; and Treasurer of the South African Jewish Historical Society. He was President of the Rand Pioneers Incorporated; member of the Johannesburg Hospital Appeal Committee; member of Executive of the Federation of Synagogues of the Transvaal; member of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and of various clubs and institutions.
