SONNENFELD, Rabbi Rafael. Rabbi of Temple Emanuel, United Progressive Jewish Congregation of Johannesburg. Born Haifa, Israel, 3rd December, 1935, son of Hans and Reis Rachel Sonnenfeld. Came to South Africa 1962. Educated at Magdiel and Hadassim schools in Israel and Institute International d'Etude Hebrigue Rabbinical College in Paris. Served for three and a half years as Intelligence Officer in the Israeli Army. Rabbi of the East London Progressive Jewish Congregation 1962-64. Married Ayala Friedman, 1959; one son, one daughter. Settled overseas.
