TOBIAS, Phillip Vallentine. F.R.S.S.Af., Ph.D., M.B., B.Ch.. F.R.A.I. Head of Department of Anatomy, University of the Witwatersrand. Born Durban 14th October, 1925. Son of late Joseph Newman Tobias and Fanny Norden. Educated at St. Andrews School Bloemfontein, Durban High School, University of the Witwatersrand and Cambridge University. President: Institute for the Study of Man in Africa (1961-68); Section E. S.A. Association for the Advancement of Science (1960-61): S. A. Archaeological Society (1964-65): Association of Science Writers of South Africa (1963-64): Human Palaeontology Section, Pan- African Congress on Pre-History (1959-63). Hon. Editor, S.A. Journal of Science; Chairman, Kalahari Research Committee (1956-68); Executive member, Education League of South Africa (1948-57). Visiting Professor of Physical Anthropology, Cambridge (1954); Council member, International Association of Human Biologies: Council member and former Vice- President, S.A.
