VAINSTEIN, Rabbi Jacob. M.A., B.L., Ph.D. Born Vitebsk 1916, son of Tuvija and Rebecca Vainstein. Educated at the Yeshiva in Jerusalem and University of Glasgow. Came to South Africa 1954, as Communal Rabbi to the Port Elizabeth United Hebrew Congregation. Member of the Beth Din, Johannesburg. Previously was Minister in Glasgow; Executive Director, Torah VaAvodah Organisation of Great Britain; Director, Department of Torah Education, Jewish Agency, Jerusalem. Served as Chairman, Education Committee of Port Elizabeth School Board; Chaplain to the S.A. Defence Forces; President, Civic Youth Centre Association, Port Elizabeth, Was Vice-President. S.A. United Mizrachi; member, Eastern Province Zionist Council and Hillel House Committee; Rhodes University; Vice-President, Port Elizabeth Ort-Oze; President, Eastern Province Mizrachi; President, "Kerem", Eastern Province Jewish Ministers' Association. Author of "Cycle of the Jewish Year" and other publications. Married Zippora Alter 1942; one son, two daughters. Returned to Israel, 1964.
