Wolfson, Wilfred


 WOLFSON, Rev. Wilfred. Minister to Carletonville and District Congregation. Born Odessa Russia 10th October, 1906, son of Maurice and Sarah Wolfson. Educated in England at County High School (Tredegar): Jew's School Manchester: Jews Free School (London) and studied at the Etz Chayim Yeshiva (London) and Manchester Talmudical College. Came to South Africa from Northern Rhodesia where he was Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Copperbelt for 3 years. Was Senior Minister/ Headmaster of the Plymouth Hebrew Congregation for 16 years; Chaplain to H.M. Prisons at Dartmoor and Exeter, and Officiating Chaplain to the Forces, in the Counties of Devon and Cornwall (England). Was the liaison Officer between the Jewish Welfare Board of New York, and the American Jewish Service Personnel stationed in the South-West of England, and received President Roosevelt's Personal envoy to Army Service Depots in that area, before D Day. Was Minister to the Grimsby Hebrew Congregation for 3 years, and Senior Minister/Head- master to Swansea Hebrew Congregation. In Western Canada, he was Senior Rabbi and Headmaster to Shaar-Hashomayim and Beth Shalom. Was B'nai B'rith Hillel Counsellor to the University of Alberta. Contributed to the Anglo-Jewish and American Jewish Press. Married first wife Ray Davies of Manchester; two sons, two daughters. Re-married to Jennie Mincowitch.
