Saron, Gustav


SARON, Gustav. B.A. Hons. (Rand.), B.A. (Oxon.), LL.B. (S.A.) General Secretary, South African Jewish Board of Deputies. Born Johannesburg 2nd November, 1905, son of Jacob Isaac and Miriam Saron. Educated at King Edward VII High School, Johannesburg: Witwatersrand University; Queens College, Oxford; School of Applied Social Sciences, Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio, U.S.A. Lecturer in Department of Classics and Department of Hebrew, Witwatersrand University, 1929-30. Practised at the Johannesburg Bar, 1930-36. Appointed Secretary of the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies in 1936 and General Secretary in 1940. Has represented South African Jewry at numerous international Jewish conferences. Awarded Scholarship of National Council of Jewish Women, U.S.A., for studies in America, 1960-61. Active in Jewish journalism in South Africa for many years. Former Leader Writer, "Zionist Record"; Leader Writer and contributor to "Jewish Affairs." Author of a number of pamphlets dealing with problems of South African Jewry. Joint Editor with Louis Hotz of "The Jews of South Africa: A History," published in 1955 by the Oxford University Press (Cape Town). Took active part in the now defunct Society of Jews and Christians and the S.A. Jewish Sociological and Historical Society.
