Segal, Leon


SEGAL, Leon. Merchant. Born in Port Said, Egypt, 24th January, 1910; son of Samuel and Carolina Segal. Educated in Alexandria, Egypt, and Bucharest, Rumania. Came to South Africa 1927. Proprietor of Smokes and Gifts Store, Johannesburg. Previously was a printer. Founder of the Society for the Jewish Handicapped and the Selwyn Segal Hostel, which was named after his late son, who was disabled. Has been a member and office- bearer in many welfare organisations in an honorary capacity during the past forty years. Executive member, Trades and Labour Council, 1945; Trustee, Joint Board, Governing Body of the Typo Union. Member of the Jewish Guild. Joined the South African Forces during World War II in 1940, but was discharged soon after, Married Fanny Miller, 17th December, 1933. Recreation: Bowls. Add.: 1503, Matroosberrg, Joubert Park; P.O.
