SILVERMAN, Jack. M.P.S., Dip Pharm. Pharmacist and Director of Companies. Born Jerusalem 28th December. 1906, son of Rev. Phillip and Sara Silverman (father was great- grandson of Rabbi David Joseph Azulai). Came to South Africa 1919. Educated at Germiston High School and Witwatersrand Technical College. Joint Chairman, Karman Drug Co. (Pty.) Ltd.; Chairman, Sperleys Pharmacy (Pty.) Ltd.; Director, Springbok Pharmacy (Pty.) Ltd., Dinwoodies (Pty.) Ltd., and other companies. President, United Progressive Jewish Congregation of Johannesburg, 1961-64; Chairman, South African Council of Progressive Jewish Education since 1963. Former Chairman, S.A. Retail Chemists' Association. Former Chairman, Pharmaceutical Society. While resident in Brakpan was Chairman of the Brakpan Chamber of Commerce, Vice-Chairman and Secretary of the East Rand Red Cross Council; President of the Brakpan Lodge of the Hebrew Order of David, and past Master, Masonic Lodges. During World War II served as Sergeant with Second Witwatersrand Rifles; transferred to S.A.M.C., Dispenser-in-charge, No. 106, S.A. General Hospital, Egypt, Tripoli and Italy.
