LIPSHITZ, Israel Lippy. F.R.S.A. Sculptor and Graphic Artist. Born Lithuania 12th May, 1903, son of Solomon Joseph and Chaya Merah Lipshitz. Came to South Africa 1908. Educated at Normal College, Cape Town, studied art in Paris, and was a pupil of the famous French sculptor, Bourdelle. Associate Professor in Fine Art and Head of Department of Sculpture of the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Has exhibited extensively in South Africa and overseas. Received Cape Tercentenary Award for Sculpture, 1953, and Medal of Honour for Sculpture of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, 1964. Many of his works have been inspired by Biblical themes and have been reproduced in Jewish journals. Pioneer of the modern movement in sculpture in S. Africa. Married Rachel Seif, 1928; two daughters. Recreations: Literary composition, ballet and music. Add.: 9, Higgo Road, Kloof Nek, P.O. Box 1731, Cape Town.
