MANDEL, Solomon. Cantor and Composer. Born in Nowy, Sacz, Poland, 27th September, 1910, son of Moses Mandel, a direct descendant of the famous Rabbi Shlomo Chrzanower. Educated at Yeshivot and Musical Academies in Krakow, Vilno and Warsaw. Became Cantor of the Ahavat Reizm Synagogue, Vilna and Chief Cantor of the Moriah Synagogue, Warsaw. Came to South Africa in 1938 as Cantor of the Benoni Synagogue, and then became Cantor of the Berea Synagogue, Johannesburg. Takes an active part in Jewish cultural activities. Has made recordings, in Poland, Israel and South Africa, of his liturgical compositions and renderings of Chazanuth and Jewish folksongs. Married Gitla Desser, 1932; one son, one daughter.
