Matthews, Hyman


MATTHEWS, Hyman, J.P. Director of Companies. Born Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, 28th December 1903; son of Solomon and Ettie Matthews. Educated at Wood Street School, won Cradock-Wells scholarship to Canton Secondary School, Cardiff and top bursary to the Municipal. Technical and Commercial College, Cardiff. Came to South Africa 1927. Founder of Matthews The Tailors and S. Matthews & Co. (Pty) Ltd., Cape Town. Chairman, Superwhite Kaolin Corp. (Pty.) Ltd., and Donohoe Investments (Pty.) Ltd. Managing Director, Matthews & Swerling (Pty.) Ltd. and Mates (Pty.) Ltd. Actively engaged in work for the welfare of the blind for past 30 years. Senior Life Vice-President of the S.A. National Council for the Blind. At request of Dr. Helen Keller during 1950's, inaugurated fund raising project to establish a hostel for elderly blind European women; as a result, a bond-free Helen Keller Hostel was opened in 1958. In 1937 established a Trophy of Light Golf Tournament in aid of funds for the S.A. National Council for the Blind (donated the trophy and has run the tournament ever since, raising thousands of rands for the blind). Life Vice-President Athlone School for the Blind, and The Cape Town Civilian Blind Society; Former committee member and a founder of the Cape Town Jewish Reform Congregation. Joined R.F.C. at age of 15 in 1918; was private in the Third S.A. Infantry Brigade in Second World War, but was discharged in 1940 owing to eyesight. Was the first Jewish captain of Canton West End Rugby Club, Cardiff (1921) and first Jewish captain of the Metropolitan Golf Club, Cape Town (1962). Founder member of the Clovelly Country Club.
