NELSON, Harry. M.A., M.D., B.Ch. B.A.O., D.P.H., D.T.M., F.R.S.H. Medical Officer of Health, Pretoria. (Retired). Now Assistant Chief M.O.H. Peri-Urban Health Board of Transvaal. Born Paarl February, 1903, son of David and Rebecca Nelson. Educated at Paarl Gymnasium, University of Cape Town and University of Dublin, and School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool. Senior Lecturer in Infectious Diseases, University of Pretoria Medical School. Previously was Medical Inspector of Schools, O.F.S.; Senior Medical Officer, Drumcondra Hospital, Dublin; Senior Surgical Officer Eccles and Patricroft Hospital, Manchester. Past President, Northern Transvaal Branch of the Medical Association of S.A.; Past President, Medical Officer of Health Group of the Medical Association of South Africa: Past President, Institute of Public Health, Chairman, Nursery School Association of South Africa. Member, Technical Advisory Committee of the National Poliomyelitis Research Foundation. Executive member, S.A. National Tuberculosis Association. Member of the Committee advising the Minister for Health on Virology. Adviser to the Division of Bacteriology for Water Research, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Member, National Committee of Control over Radioactive Waste Disposal, Atomic Energy Board. Hon. Life Associate member, S.A. Veterinary Medical Services. Hon. Life President, Institute of Public Health. Has worked in Israel on three separate occasions and initiated the writing of the Public Health Act for the Israeli Government. During World War II was Director of Hygiene, Union Defence Force. At present, Hon. Adviser in Public Health to the Defence Force. Member, Pretoria Golf Club and Wingate Country Club.
