Newman, Jacob


NEWMAN, Rabbi Professor Jacob. M.A., D.Litt. Born in Bratislava, 1914, son of Wolf William and Nettie Nechama Newman. Educated at Yeshiva College, Bratislava, and Universities of Manchester, London and Pretoria. Was Rabbi of Petrzalka, Czechoslovakia, 1936-38; thereafter held positions in England before coming to South Africa in 1951 as National Rabbi to the Country Communities. Now Rabbi of Northern Suburbs Hebrew Congregation, Johannesburg, and Professor of Post-Biblical Jewish Literature, University of Pretoria. President, Jewish Students' Association, University of Pretoria; Convener, Jewish Studies Fund. President, S.A. Jewish Ministers' Association. Author of: "Semikhah" (Ordination) (1950); "Judaism in the Home" (1956); "Speak Unto the Children of Israel" (1957); "With Ink in the Book" (1957); "A Guide to Judaism for the Young" (1959); "Nahmanides" (1960); "Birur Halachah" (1964): "The Eternal Quest" (1965); "Early Halachic Sources" (1965) "Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Handbook (1967); "Towards Light" (1967). Editor of "Lessons on the Jewish Heritage and Lessons in Jewish History." Contributor to numerous journals. Married Zelda, daughter of Rev. A. R.
