KUSSEL, Sallie. National Organiser. B'nai B'rith Council for Southern Africa. Born Oudtshoorn, C.P.. daughter of Max and Anna Lea Kussel, and granddaughter of the Oudtshoorn pioneer Samuel Lazarus. Educated at Girls' High School, Oudtshoorn, Was Accountant in Oudtshoorn and Johannesburg prior to becoming National Organiser of the Union of Jewish Women of Southern Africa, a position she held for 16 years; resigned in 1960. Member, S.A. Institute of International Affairs (Witwatersrand Branch); Hon. International Standing Committee member (National Adviser) for Migration for the National Council of Women of S.A.; was Vice-President, Johannesburg Branch of the N.C.W., 1962: Hon. Treasurer, 1961; Founder and Hon. Life member of the Oudtshoorn Branch of the N.C.W. and has represented N.C.W. of S.A. at conferences of the International Council of Women on 7 occasions. One of the Founders and an Hon. Life member, Oudtshoorn Branch of the Union of Jewish Women. Represented the U.J.W. at three conferences of the International Council of Jewish Women. Pioneer in promoting goodwill meetings for bringing Jewish and non-Jewish and English and Afrikaans speaking women together throughout the country, under the auspices of the N.C.W. and U.J.W. Executive member, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies: Council member, S.A. Zionist Association; past President of Herzl Ladies' Zionist Society, Oudtshoorn, and past Hon. Secretary of the Queen Street Synagogue Women's Board of Aid, Oudtshoorn. Founder and President of the First Junior Citizens' League in S.A. Was the youngest woman in South Africa to fight for women's rights and to attend Women's Enfranchisement League Conferences. Founded the Council for Women's Organisations in Israel, 1951. Executive member, S.A. Friends of the Hebrew. University. Vice-President of First B'nai B'rith Women's Chapter of South Africa 1964. Received the Long Service Medal for Girl Guide work in South Africa; was Girl Guide Commissioner in Oudtshoorn, 1938-1946; Commissioner for Handicapped Girl Guides in Transvaal. Executive member, United Nations Association of South Africa for past 19 years. Recreations: Reading, needlework, studying international affairs, appreciation of art.
