Leiman, Rachel Freda


LEIMAN, Rachel Freda. Housewife. Born Zager, Lithuania, 15th March, 1892, daughter of Abel Nathan and Bessie Mary Jankelowitz. Came to South Africa 1903. Educated in Lithuania and South Africa. Took active part in communal work in Randfontein in 1910, where her late husband, Mr. Solomon Ostroff, helped to found the Hebrew Congregation. First Chairlady of Women's Zionist League in Parys shortly after First World War; her late husband helped to found the Hebrew Congregation there, too. Inscribed in the Golden Book for her services. Continued her communal work when the family moved to Mayfair, Johannesburg, where her late husband also played a leading part in congregational work. National Treasurer, 1937, Johannesburg Women's Mizrachi. Hon. Life Chairman, Mayfair Branch of the Women's Zionist League. Hon. Life President, Parktown, Saxonwold and Houghton Branch of the Women's Mizrachi. Hon. Life President of the Greenside-Emmarentia Branch of the Women's Mizrachi. Member of original Ladies' Committee of Habonim. Played leading part in raising funds for Achuzath Sarah Home in Israel. Member of Balfour Park. Married the late Solomon Ostroff in 1910 and Mr. David Leiman in 1950. Mrs. Leiman has four sons. Harry, Julius, Simon and Maurice Ostroff; and two daughters, Mrs. Len Phillips and Mrs. Israel Katz (who practises as a Barrister in Tel Aviv). Recreations: Bowls and music.
