LEVINSON, Rebecca. Teacher. Born London, 18th April, 1890; daughter of Edward Louis and Julia Davids. Came to South Africa 1897. Educated at school in South Africa and at Jewish Teachers' Training Centre, London. Was Principal of the first Talmud Torah for girls in Cape Town (1914) and became co-Principal of Hillel College, Johannesburg, which she established together with her husband, the late Lt.-Col. Israel Levinson. Teacher of Bible and Religion at Ellerslie High School, Sea Point, Cape Town, 1957- 59, and King David School, Victory Park, Johannesburg, 1961-62. Honorary Matron of the Cape Jewish Orphanage, 1913; Honorary Teacher of Religion at Jewish Training Centre, Highbury, New Park, London, 1909-1911. Represented Oxford Synagogue, Johannesburg, on Council of United Hebrew Congregation, 1948. Honorary worker for Achiezer Organisation in Israel for one year. Has a special interest in Keriot Hatorah and chanting of the Haftorah, and has trained many young South African boys for their Barmitzvot. Widow of the late Lt.- Col. Israel Levinson, whom she married in 1915; three sons, three daughters. Add.: 4, Olivia Court, Olivia Road, Berea, Johannesburg.
