IDELSON, Jeremiah (Jerry). Musician. Born Libau, Latvia, 12th December, 1893, son of Azriel Fishel and Dora Idelson. Educated in Libau at Hebrew and Government Schools. Came to South Africa 1912. Studied music privately with Professor P. R. Kirby and at the S.A. College of Music, C.T. Director of Music, United Progressive Jewish Congregation, Johannesburg; Hon. Director of Music, S.A. Union for Progressive Judaism. Previously violist with African Theatres Ltd. and S.A. Broadcasting Corporation, also Cape Town Municipal Orchestra. Founder Member of: Yiddish Dramatic and Literary Society (1912); Party (1926); Liberal Jewish Union of S.A. (1930); Johannesburg Jewish Reform Congregation (1933); Magen David Adom; Histadrut Ivrith. Founder, Secretary and Chairman of the Vegetarian Society; Founder and first Chairman of the Mountain Club (1930); Chairman and Secretary of the Society of S.A. Composers (1944); Founder member of the Musicians' Union (1913); member of the Transvaal Automobile Club; Hon. Life member of the Mountain Club of S.A. (Transvaal Branch), P.A.G.D.C.
