ISRAELSTAM, Samuel Sholem. M.Sc., Ph.D. (Rand), F.R.I.C., Hon. M.S.A.Chem.I. Associate Professor of Chemistry, University of the Witwatersrand. Born Johannesburg, 21st August, 1909, son of Isaiah and Florrie Israelstam. Educated at Commercial High School, Johannesburg, Teachers' Training College and University of the Witwatersrand. Member of the Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Council. Awarded Carnegie Corporation Travel Grant to study Alumni Organization and Chemical Education in the U.S.A., 1959. Invited by the American Association for the Advancement of Science as a visiting foreign scientist to lecture to Chemistry Institutes in the U.S.A., 1967. Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the U.S.A. S.A. Leader Exchange Programme. Director of Alumni Affairs, Convocation of the University of the Witwatersrand; past President of the Convocation. Past President, S.A. Chemical Institute. Past president, Science Writers' Association. Chairman of Wits Alumni Fund. Past President, Chaim Weizmann Lodge, Hebrew Order of David. Former Chairman, North Eastern Jewish Community Council; former Committee member, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies. Member of Kelvin House, Johannesburg; Married Esther Zaidel, 1934; three sons, two daughters. Recreations: Reading, various educational interests.
