Jacobson, Moses


JACOBSON, Moses. Master Printer. Born in Jacobstadt, Kurland, 15th September, 1878, son of Marcus and Gesy-Rebka Jacobson. Educated in Kurland and in U.S.A., where he studied typography. Came to South Africa in 1906. Established, together with his brother, the late Isaac Jacobson, the firm of Progress Printing (Pty.) Ltd., in Cape Town; Retired from business 1955. Leading personality in Grand Order of Israel Lodge; Nobel Master in 1917-1919; Hon. Treasurer 1922-58; took active part in amalgamating King David Lodge with Grand Order of Israel Lodge, and in recognition of his services was elected Hon. Life Nobel Master and inscribed in the Golden Book. Past President and Hon. Life Committee member of Cape Hebrew Helping Hand Association; Hon. Treasurer of New Hebrew Congregation, Cape Town, 1942-44. Member of Numismatic Society. Served in Russian Army during the Russo-Japanese War, holding a commissioned officer's rank in the Intelligence Department. which was a singular distinction for a Jew in the Czarist Army.
