KAMINER, Cantor Idel, Retired. Born Mir, Poland, 1st April, 1898, son of Reb. Leib and Bunya Kaminer. Educated Mir. Came to South Africa 1926. Studied traditional Chazanut under the famous Cantor Shklar in Mir; modern Chazanut under Chief Cantor Pincasovitch in Johannesburg; and voice production under Professor Magotini in Johannesburg. Was Cantor at the Shaa rei Zion Shul in Slonim, Poland, before coming to South Africa. After serving as Cantor at the Fordsburg-Mayfair, Yeoville and Doornfontein Synagogues, he became Cantor of the United Hebrew Institutions of Germiston, 1936, officiating with distinction at Germiston Synagogue for nearly 30 years, until his recent retirement. Trained the Germiston Shul Choir; was founder and first Secretary of the Lomdei Torah Study Circle; and participated actively in the Hebrew Order of David. An accomplished Hebrew calligrapher, he has been Sopher (Scribe) to the Johannesburg Beth Din for the past 35 years. Married Annie Kaminer, 1937; one son, one daughter. Recreation: Music.
