Goudvis, Bertha Frances


GOUDVIS, Bertha Frances. Died 1966. Veteran South African writer. Born Barrow-in-Furness Lancs., England, 6th April, 1876, daughter of Jacob and Victoria Cinamon. Came to South Africa 1881 with her parents; her father was a pioneer of Barberton and Bulawayo. Started writing in her teens and served as columnist for many years on the "Natal Mercury" and "The Star." Interested in Zionism from an early age and became one of the Founders and first Hon. Treasurer of the Johannesburg Women's Zionist League; subsequently became an Honorary Life member of its Executive. Member of the Union of Jewish Women and of the National Council of Women. Several of her plays have been performed in South Africa. Her play "Aliens" won second prize in an international competition organised by the Jewish Drama League of London. Publications include a novel, "Little Eden," and a book of short stories, "The Mistress of Mooiplaas." Married the late Lucas Samuel Goudvis, 1896; two sons (one killed in a motor crash), one daughter.
