Greenstein, Max


GREENSTEIN, Max. Director of Companies. Born in Lithuania 28th April, 1902. son of Meyer and Feiga Greenstein (father was one of the founders of the Doornfontein Talmud Torah). Arrived in South Africa 1912. Educated at Commercial High School, Johannesburg. Director of Greenstein & Rosen (Pty.) Ltd.; Innes Chambers; Corporation Buildings; Van Riebeeck Undertakings (Durban) and other companies. Has played a leading role in the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies since 1950, when he joined the Board's Executive Council, and a few months later was elected Hon. Treasurer, an office which he has held continuously since then. Helped to initiate the S.A. Jewish War Appeal in 1941 and was elected Transvaal Chairman of the Appeal. Elected National Chairman of the S.A. Jewish Appeal in 1949, and is now its Vice-President. Vice-President, Israeli United Appeal, since 1949. Chairman of the Ministers' and Teachers' Pension Fund initiated by the Board of Deputies. and Chairman of the Board's Premises Committee. Elected President, S.A. Board of Jewish Education, 1967. Member of Houghton Golf Club. Married Althea Lily Sass, 1929; one son, one daughter. Recreation: Bowls.
