Gut (formerly Minister of the Etz Chayim Congregation Johannesburg). Educated in Germany at Jewish Preparatory School, Catholic High School and University of Cologne. Arrived South Africa 1936. Before settling in S.A. was business executive in Timber Industry in Germany. Past Vice-Chairman, Federation of Synagogues of Transvaal, O.F.S. and Natal; member of its Council since 1945; Deputy, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, since 1946; acting Chairman, Etz Chayim Hebrew Congregation, 1945-50. Served on Country Communities Committee of Board of Deputies. Served in the Police Reserve during World War II. Married Else Ullmann (sister of the artist, Ernest Ullmann), 1935; one daughter, married to Selwyn Suchet.
