Harber, Alec


HARBER, Alec. Railway and Shipping Clerk. Born London, 22nd July, 1901, son of Isaac and Esther Harber. Came to South Africa in 1914. Educated at the Newtown Government School and Transvaal Commercial College. Railway and Shipping Clerk, Stewards & Lloyds, Vereeniging. Previously in Government Service (Postal and Railway Departments). Held various positions and grades with Government over a period of thirty-five years from Telegraphist to Station Master. Vice-Chairman, Magen David Adom; Committee member, I.U.A., Vereeniging; Member of United Hebrew Institutions of Vereeniging, and other Jewish organisations, cultural, charitable and social; member of Vereeniging Photographic Society (Stills and Cine); Red Cross Society, S.P.C.A., S.A. Blood Transfusion Service (almost 100 donations of blood). Writer of short stories and articles, traveller and lecturer. Served with the South African Forces in World War II 2nd Docks Operating Company, SA.E.C., R.H.B., 1941-45, in Egypt and Italy, W.S. Staff Sergeant. Married Sally Barnett, 3rd June, 1923; one son, one daughter. Recreations: Writing, swimming, travelling. Add.: Central Hotel, Vereeniging.
