Friedland, Garson (Gus)


FRIEDLAND, Garson (Gus). M.B., Ch.B. (Aberd.), D.M.R. & E. (Liverpool). Radiologist. Born Lithuania 15th April, 1896, son of Herman and Anna Friedland. Came to South Africa 1896. Educated at Jeppe High School, Johannesburg, and Universities of Witwatersrand, Aberdeen and Liverpool. Radiologist, Pretoria General Hospital; Director, Cumbrae Investment Co. (Pty.) Ltd. Pioneer Radiologist in Pretoria and founder (1932) of the Radiological Society of South Africa and its first Secretary. Was Senior Radiologist in charge, Pretoria General Hospital and No. 1 Military Hospital, Voortrekkerhoogte; Radiologist to Weskoppies Hospital. Was Radiologist to Iscor and S.A. Railways and Consulting Radiologist to the S.A.M.C. Served with the S.A.M.C. as W/S Major during World War II. Was Organising Secretary of Col. Kisch's Keren Hayesod Campaign, 1928. Committee member for several years of Pretoria Zionist Society and Pretoria United Hebrew Congregation. Foundation member, Wingate Country Club; member, Pretoria Country Club, Waterkloof; Affiliated Life member, S.A.M.C. Headquarters Officers' Mess, Voortrekkerhoogte. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. Joseph Shar, 22nd March, 1922; two sons, one daughter. Recreations: Golf, bowls, chess. Add.: 849, Government Avenue, Arcadia, P.O. Box 2523, Pretoria.
