Friedman, Joseph Jacob


FRIEDMAN, Joseph Jacob. Q.C., LL.B. Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa. Born Kimberley 19th February, 1908, son of Morris Leonard and Dora Rebecca Friedman. Educated at Christian Brothers' College, Kimberley, and University of Cape Town. Practised at Kimberley Bar from 1929 until outbreak of World War II in 1939, when he joined the Kimberley Regiment. Transferred to Durban in 1943 as Judge Advocate for Natal. Upon demobilisation in 1946, commenced practice as Advocate at Natal Bar in Durban. Made Queen's Counsel in 1949. Elevated to the Bench in February, 1964, after having held several appointments as Acting Judge. Chairman, Society of Advocates for Natal, 1959, and 1963-64. President, Council of Natal Jewry, 1951-53; Vice-President, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, 1951-53; Chairman, Public Relations Committee, Council of Natal Jewry, 1947-51; Hon. Secretary, Griqualand West Hebrew Congregation, 1936-40. Member, Circle Country Club, Durban Jewish Club, Victoria Club, Pietermaritzburg: Durban Rotary Club. Married Kate Bergman 11th December, 1932; two sons. Recreation: Golf. Add.: 307, Bona Vista, Bellevue Road, Durban.
