Burman, Jose Lionel


BURMAN, Jose Lionel. B.A., LL.B. Solicitor and Author. Born in Jagersfontein, O.F.S., 10th April, 1917, son of Elias Lewis and Dora Burman. Educated at St. Andrews School, Bloemfontein, and University of South Africa. Council Member of Jewish Reform Congregation, Cape Town, Temple Brotherhood, etc. President and Founder of S.A. Speleological Association; member of Mountain Club of South Africa. During World War II joined Army as Private; promoted to Lieutenant after O.T.C., Voortrekkerhoogte; served 1st Brigade, 1941-42 in Libya as machine-gun officer. Author of "Safe to the Sea" (1962), "Peninsula Profile" (1963), "So High the Road" (1964), "A Peak to Climb" (1966), "Great Shipwrecks" (1967). Married Ruth Valerie Herbert 14th January, 1943; one daughter. Recreations: Climbing, caving and photography. Add.: 11, Abingdon Road, Kenilworth, P.O. Box 3538, Cape Town.
