Cherniavsky, Alexander


CHERNIAVSKY, Alexander. Impresario. Born in Odessa, Russia, in 1896, son of Abraham and Rosa Cherniavsky. His brothers, Leo, Jan and Michel, formed the first Cherniavsky Trio which attained world fame and made their first concert tour of South Africa in 1908. Alex, his sister Marion, and his cousin, Boris, formed the second Cherniavsky Trio, which toured South Africa for the first time in 1912 and gave 600 concerts here. Both trios travelled the world on successive tours. Alex Cherniavsky then settled in South Africa, becoming an Impresario and presenting famous artists, starting with Anna Pavlova and her company in ballet in 1925: thereafter Jascha Heifetz, Benno Moiseiwitsch and Amalita Galli Curci. He continued as an Impresario in association with African Theatres Ltd., bringing to South Africa a long list of world famous musicians. Among South African artistes he personally managed are Mimi Coertse and Hanlie van Niekerk. He taught Marian Friedman from the age of seven and presented her first concert appearances in 1963.
