BAITZ, Rev. Bernhard. Minister of Religion. Deceased. Came to South Africa in 1908 from Shavel, Lithuania, where he was born and was educated at Yeshivoth, obtaining Smichas Rabbonus from distinguished Rabbis. He ministered first in Mossel Bay and then in Uniondale, where he served until his retirement and where he won the deepest respect of Jew and non-Jew alike. He thereafter lived in a small village near Ladismith, Cape, where he devoted himself to study and to assisting at services in Ladismith and Oudtshoorn. He was married to the eldest daughter of an Oudtshoorn pioneer, A. M. Kaplan, and had four sons and five daughters.
