Baneshik, Percival Leon


BANESHIK, Percival Leon. Journalist and Broadcaster. Born Johannesburg 6th November, 1915, son of Charles and Hettie Baneshik. Book Review Editor and Dramatic Critic, "Rand Daily Mail", Johannesburg. Started broadcasting in the 1930's with the African Broadcasting Company as Assistant News Editor, and originated the Children's Hour as "Uncle Percy." When the South African Broadcasting Corporation was formed, he continued in the same position, as well as writing and producing many radio plays, including "The Garden on the Threshold" (the Van Riebeeck Festival play) and "Hole in the Heart." a radio presentation of a heart operation which has been broadcast all over the world. Author of several stage plays, including the Witwatersrand University Festival prize-winner, "Elizabeth Wears a Wig." Served as Radio Officer to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (F.A.O.) of the United Nations in Washington, U.S.A., 1947-48. Chief columnist, "Rand Daily Mail", 1962-64. Arts and Entertainments Editor and Dramatic Critic, "Sunday Chronicle", 1965-66. Executive member, S.A. Pen Centre. Recreations: Reading, music, motoring.
