BENDER, Rabbi Barney. Born Slonim, Poland, 25th July, 1925, son of Philip and Mary Bender. Came to South Africa 1933. After completing his schooling in Cape Town, went to London to study for the Rabbinate at Jews' College and Etz Chayim Yeshiva. Commenced his ministry as spiritual leader of Boksburg Jewry. Appointed Rabbi of the United Hebrew institutions of Germiston, 1958. Now Rabbi of the United Hebrew Institutions of Port Elizabeth. Member of the Hebrew Order of David and various cultural organisations. Married Doreen Hyman, 1952; two daughters, one son. Add.: 5 Gipson Road, Port Elizabeth.
