Berman, Louis Eli


BERMAN, Louis Eli. Attorney. Born Dublin, Ireland, 3rd September 1894, son of Harris and Brina Berman. Came to South Africa 1903. Educated in Dublin, Krugersdorp, Pretoria Boy's High School, Transvaal University College, Pretoria. Senior partner, Buchanan & Berman. Chairman of the Law Circle, Wynberg, for past five years; Member of Benevolent Fund, Law Society of Cape, for past four years. Member, Muizenberg Hebrew Congregation. Was Chairman of the Wynberg Zionist Society during the visit to South Africa of Dr. Chaim Weizmann and Dr. Nahum Sokolow; and acted as chairman of their campaign in Wynberg. Member Wynberg Social Club, Wynberg Bowling Club, Clovelly Country Club. Played Currie Cup Rugby for Transvaal 1914; was the first Jew to represent Transvaal (and the youngest member of the team). Was secretary of the Pretoria Rugby Union and assisted the late Judge Maritz in selection of teams. Played tennis, bowls and golf at the Cape; won several bowling trophies. Married late Esther Robinson 1920; one son, two daughters. After death of first wife, married Mrs. Jessie Schauder (she has two sons and one daughter by her late husband, a former Mayor of Uitenhage). Add.: Main Road, Kenilworth, P.O. Box 19, Wynberg, Cape.
