BERNSTEIN, Bertrand Leon. B.A. (Hons.). LL.B. Deputy Chairman, Anglo Transvaal Consolidated Investment Co. Ltd. Born Johannesburg 13th August, 1907, son of Ida and George Bernstein. Educated at King Edward VII School and Witwatersrand University. Chairman and Director of several Mining. Financial and Industrial Companies. Former Advocate of the Supreme Court (practised at Johannesburg Bar 1929-1935). President, Transvaal and O.F.S. Chamber of Mines, 1955-1956: Executive member since 1953; Chairman, S.A. Institute of Medical Research, 1953- 1960; Chairman of Council, University of the Witwatersrand, since 1959; Syndic. member, Witwatersrand Council of Education. Member of Rand Club, Johannesburg Country Club, Inanda Club and Wanderers Club. Married Barbara Leon 18th June, 1937. Breeder of pedigree Frieslands at Lidgetton, Natal. Author of "The Tide Turned at Alamein" and "Tomorrow is Another Day." During World War II served with S.A. Infantry Division, with rank of Captain, in North African Campaign, 1940-1943.
