BERNSTEIN, Edgar. Journalist. Born Germiston, Tvl., 1st August, 1912, son of Alfred Stanley and Rose Bernstein. Educated at Germiston High School and Witwatersrand University. Assistant Editor, "S.A. Jewish Times," and South African Correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Executive member, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, since 1951; Chairman, Jewish Book Month (1960-64). Chairman, Temple Israel Management Committee (1967); Vice-Chairman, (1964-66). Vice-President South African P.E.N. Centre (1967); Chairman (1962-65); Vice-Chairman (1959-1962). Hon Secretary, Bezuidenhout Valley Junior School Committee, since 1954. Member, Hebrew Order of David, B'nai B'rith and Society of Journalists. Author of "The Crime of Modern Man" (1944), "The Legacy of General Smuts" (1950), "My Judaism, My Jews" (1962). Married Adèle Sherman, 1946; has two sons, one by previous marriage.
