BESSARABIA, Benjamin. M.B., B.Ch. Medical Practitioner. Born Cape Town 18th May, 1902, son of Nathan Bernard and Lea Minna Bessarabia. Educated at Jeppe High School and University of the Witwatersrand. Resident Medical Officer, Witwatersrand Jewish Aged Home. Previously in private practice. Held appointment as Hon, Superintendent, Charles Johnson Hospital, Zululand; District Surgeon, Nqutu, Zululand (1928-40); Honorary Medical Officer, Pioneer Home, Johannesburg, 1946-61; Honorary Medical Officer, St. Thomas School (1946-61). Between the years 1946-61 was Honorary Medical Officer to the Johannesburg Chevra Kadisha, the Witwatersrand Jewish Aged Home, the Jewish Women's Benevolent Society, the S.A. Jewish Orphanage (1955-61); and the Jewish Deaf Hostel. Served with the S.A. Medical Corps during World War II in South Africa and Egypt. Married Dr. Rachel Getz, 1943.
