ARONOWSKY, Solomon (Solly). B.A., LL.B. (Hons.). Ph.D., F.S.T.I., M.L.A.M.L. (Unesco), M.S.A.S.M.T. Chief Music Librarian, S.A, Broadcasting Corporation, Johannesburg, Born Suvalki, Poland, 6th October, 1911, son of Hirsch and Gitl Aronowsky. Came to South Africa 1935. Educated at the Deutsche Oberrealschule, Kovno: Conservatoire of Music, Kovno: University of Vytautas (the Great), Kovno; and University of the Witwatersrand. Director of Music, Founder and Conductor of the Jewish Guild Orchestra and the Johannesburg Promenade Orchestra, Sworn Translator in five languages and Commissioner of Oaths. Managing Director. Solly Aronowsky Concert Bureau (Pty.) Ltd. Was Founder and Conductor of the Marist Brothers Orchestra, and Violin Master: Counsellor and Legal Adviser on Lithuanian Law to the Lithuanian Consul-General in South Africa; adjudicator and selector of syllabus of National Music Festivals and Eisteddfodau: a first violinist of the S.A.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. Member of Convocation Council, University of the Witwatersrand; Practical Music Instructor of the University of the Witwatersrand. Hon Director of Johannesburg City Ballet; Hon. Director of OPSA (Afrikaans Opera Association). Executive member of the S.A. Association of Arts and the S.A. Society of Music Teachers: Council member and Fellow of S.A. Society of Sworn Translators; member. International Association of Music Librarians (UNESCO): Chairman, Music Advisory Council of the National Youth Orchestra, Transvaal; member of the Music Advisory Committee of the Johannesburg City Council. Deputy to S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies. Executive member Chazonim and Choirmasters Association and Ort-Oze Vocational Guidance Bureau, Musical Director and co-founder of the Jewish Musical Institute of South Africa; Musical Director and Conductor of the "Zamir" Orchestra (which made LP recordings of Israeli and Jewish music). Author of Performing Times of Orchestral Works (published in London and New York); Recipient of Naumburg Foundation Award, New York. Recipient of five gold medals for conducting. Hon Life Member, Jewish Guild: member. Jewish Guild Country Club: member, B'nai B'rith Lodge. Married Miriam Misheiker, 1935; two sons, one daughter.
