Educated at Grey College, Bloemfontein, Smithfield High School, University of Cape Town and Guy's Hospital, London. Member of the S.A. Medical Association and of the British Medical Association. Appointed by the State President to the Council of the University of Cape Town. Chairman, Western Province Rugby Selection Committee; President, University of Cape Town Rugby Club; member, S.A. Rugby Board; Vice-President, Rugby Roma, Italy. Played for 1937 Springbok Rugby Team in five test matches against the All Blacks and Australia. Captain of Barbarians, Middlesex County and South African Army XV. Chosen as Player of the year 1937. Married Iris Hefferman 6th June, 1939; two sons, one daughter. During World War II, served with S.A.M.C., 1939-1945, 1st Transvaal Scottish Regiment: awarded Military Cross at Battle of El Alamein.
