LOPATO, Nehemiah, Cantor; First Reader, Yeoville Synagogue. Son of renowned Chazan, Hirsch Lopato, who was also synagogal composer. Born in Shavely, Lithuania. Came to South Africa in 1913. At age of 21, went to famous Chief Cantor Birnbaum, from whom received training in voice production; also educated at Conservatoire in Berlin; in 1913; became Chazan, Pretoria Hebrew Congregation, where recommended by Cantor Sirota.
