HAARBURGER, Ivan Hatwig, Merchant, Justice of the Peace. Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1869, and educated there. Came to Bloemfontein in 1888. Married in 1903 to Elly Rosenthal; has two children. Mayor of Bloemfontein in 1912-14 and 1916. Member of the Liquor Licensing Court; Member, Licence Certificate Board; Member of Committee of the Grey College and Eunice High School; Chairman of the Board of Bloemfontein Board of Executors & Trust Co., Ltd.; Member of the local Board of the S.A. Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd.; only Sworn Translator of the Supreme Court, O.F.S., Provincial Division in the French and German languages; was repeatedly President of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Grey University College Council; President of Hebrew Congregation in 1902 and in 1924; Chairman of the Russian Relief Fund during war period; President of Keren Hayesod Committee; Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies of the Grand Lodge of England since 1902; has concentrated on the following Lodges: Ivan H. Haarburger Lodge, Trompsburg; The Golden Hope Lodge, Heilbron; Basutoland Lodge, Maseru; Acacia Lodge, Colesberg. Member of the Author's Club in London being the author of many Masonic lectures. Was in musical spheres; has taken a leading part and was the Conductor of the only Orchestral Society that Bloemfontein ever had during the years 1892 to 1903.
