HOPPENSTEIN, Charles, Estate, Financial and Shipping Agent (Boksburg and Benoni). Born in Kalvaria, Lithuania, in 1889. Educated in a Russian High School and in Teshivoth. Arrived in South Africa in 1909 from Palestine, where resided two years. Appointed Hon. Associate of the S.A. Zionist Federation in 1912; came to Boksburg in 1913; represented the Boksburg Zionist Association at the South African Jewish Congress held in Johannesburg, in April, 1916, and at every Zionist Conference held at various places in the Union, since 1916; one of the Founders of the Boksburg Zionist Association, and its President, 1919-1923 and 1928; Vice-President, 1923-1928; Hon. Secretary, also acted as Hon. Treasurer, for Boksburg Branch of the Jewish War Victims' and Orphans' Funds; takes an active part in all Jewish Communal Work; Member of the Jewish Guild, Johannesburg, and various Clubs and Institutions.
