Judelowitz, Jacob Solomon

JUDELOWITZ, Jacob Solomon, engineer and Principal "Eber" Hebrew College and Boarding Home, 68 Barnato Street, Berea. Born in 1880 in District Kovno, Lithuania. Educated at late father's Hebrew School and Jewish Colleges in Lithuania and Poland. Married in 1904 to Fanny E. Guttman; has seven children. Took Degree of "Maschineningenieur" in Berlin; in Germany, took an active part in Zionism and Hebrew culture; helped to organise the first Conference of Hebrew Literature and Culture in 1909 at Berlin, in co-operation with S. A. Hurwitz, R. Brainin, S. A. Horoditzky, and others. Came to South Africa in 1911, and after vain search for an engineering position, devoted himself to Hebrew Education. Played an active part in Zionism and had lectured in Hebrew and Yiddish to many Cultural Societies; was Hon. Secretary of the Society for the promotion of Hebrew Knowledge; Chairman, Transvaal Hebrew Teachers' Association; Chairman, Yiddish Literary and Dramatic Society; Chairman, Moses Hess Group; Vice-Chairman, South African Zeire Zion; Committee Member, Zionist Revisionist Association; since arrival in South Africa, has contributed to local Jewish Press; edited Di Naye Heim, daily (1913); edited Yiddish Supplement of Zionist Record (1914), and Yiddish Supplement of Ivri Onouchi (1924-5); his articles about the bibliography of the Jewish Press in South Africa in South African Jewish Chronicle Annuals (1914-1915), and in Das Naya Wort (1916), were greatly appreciated by Jewish bibliographers; there is also an article on the history of the Jewish Press in the present Year Book.
