KESSEL, Solomon, Merchant and Manufacturer. Born in Shavly, Lithuania, in 1864. Educated Shavly Gymnasium. Came to South Africa in 1882. Married in 1888 to Rosa Kantor; has six children. One of the Founders of the Witwatersrand Hebrew Benevolent Association; Committee Member of the First Committee of the President Street Synagogue; Committee of Doornfontein Synagogue, held this position at intervals until 1928; Committee Member of the Chevra Kadisha since 1906; one of the Founders and Committee Member of the Jewish Aged Home, Johannesburg; one of the Founders of the Shavly Sick Benefit Society, and Chairman since its inception in 1912 until 1926; at present Vice-Chairman of the Society; from 1899 to 1904 on the Committee of the Pretoria Hebrew Congregation; has always been interested in Jewish Communal affairs, and is a strong supporter of Zionism; has also been interested in various Mining Propositions on the Rand.
