Genussow, Manuel Leo

GENUSSOW, Manuel Leo (Barkly West). Born in Lithuania and educated there. Whilst in Berlin, was one of first disciples of Theodor Herzl. Came to South Africa in 1898. One of founders and President of the Dorshei Zion Association a former in Cape Town; District Councillor of the South African Zionist Federation and  a corresponding Member; organised Zionism in New Zealand in 1912, and was instrumental in re-forming the Auckland Zionist Society, the premier Society of New Zealand; has spoken and lectured on Zionism in distant parts of the world, such as Panama, San Francisco, and the South Sea Islands; visited Palestine in 1909 and 1913. Married in Palestine to Zipporah Schechter, of Zichron Jacob, a daughter of Israel Schechter, twin brother of late Professor Schechter; has four children, two of whom are being educated in Palestine. On occasion of opening of Kimberley-Barkly West railway extension he presented, on behalf of Jews in the district, a magnificent silver-mounted and inscribed copy of the Old Testament in Hebrew and English to General J. C. Smuts, in recognition of his services to the Jewish National Home: Past Deputy Mayor of Barkly West; Member of Divisional Council, Municipal Council, District School Board, and Library.
