Gitlin, Jacob

GITLIN, Jacob, Furniture Merchant. Born in Lithuania in 1878. Married in 1898 to Sarah Witebsky; has five children. Came to South Africa in 1902. For 27 years has been the moving and driving spirit of Zionism in the Cape Peninsula; his perseverance and enthusiasm have steered the Dorshei Zion Association so that it is an outstanding force in South African Zionism; his tremendous efforts as Hon. Secretary of this Association have brought it to its present pitch of activity; for some years, was acting President of the Capetown Hebrew Helping Hand Association; was also one of the most prominent workers for the Cape Jewish War Victims Fund; and was one of the most ardent advocates for the creation of the Orphans' Colony in Palestine which led to the establishment of K'far Yeladim (Children's Village).
