COUZIN, Abraham ben Jehudah. Born in Dilef, Poland, in 1868. Educated Cheder and at Yeshivah, being a pupil of well-known Rabbis. Married to Branche Simmons in 1889. Went to London in 1890, and came to South Africa in 1903. In 1898, together with J. Cohen-Lask, was prime mover and founder of the first Zionist Society in London; was instrumental in forming Wynberg Zionist Society and Talmud Torah and Zionist Society in Claremont; Chairman, Boksburg Talmud Torah, 1909; Founder and Chairman of Doornfontein Zionist Society, 1919; in 1927 founder the South African Jewish Historical Society; proudest achievement that of Founder-through the medium of the United Hebrew Polish Society-of the Jewish War Victims' Fund in Johannesburg, and Chairman of its Functions Committee for 5 years; greatly interested in Hebrew and Yiddish literary development; in 1896, assisted in publishing Hayehude in London; contributed in Yiddish to the following papers: Jewish Gazette and Tageblatt, New York; Hakochow, The Standard, Africander, Jewish Voice, Johannesburg; Africander, Advocat, Cape Town; has also contributed to The Star, Sunday Times, South African Jewish Chronicle, Zionist Record, Cape Argus, Natal Mercury, etc.; Author of "Outlines of the History of the Jews in South Africa," some chapters of which are published; a fragment of this appears in the German book, "Jews and Judaism," Vienna; in 1924, published history of Johannesburg Jewish Institutions; also a short biography of Dr. J. L. Landau.
