EILENBERG, Maurice, Manufacturer. Justice of the Peace for 25 years. Born in Krakau, Austria, in 1857. Came to South Africa in 1876 (naturalised British subject). Married in November, 1897, to Hannah Rosenberg; settled in British Namaqualand as a store-keeper and farmer; erected the first modern buildings in what is now Garies, being practically founder of that village; first post cart contractor in Namaqualand; returned to Cape Town in 1889 and started present business; established the first factory in this country of waterproof garments and rubber requisites, which business is still in existence as M. Eilenberg & Co., Ltd.; also carried on business of an export and import merchant of produce; has occupied numerous positions of trust; Director of the Cape Town Tramway Co., and other companies; for many years has been on the Board of the Somerset Hospital, and was a member of the Finance Committee; Principal Organiser of the building of the Mother Synagogue of South Africa, which is situated in Government Avenue; ex-President of that Congregation, and is Senior Trustee is one of the founders of the Cape Jewish Aged Home, at present Chairman of the said Institution; one of the first Chairmen of the Jewish Philanthropic Society of Cape Town; one of the founders of the first Hebrew Public School, Hope Mill, and was Chairman for several years of the Cape Town Public Talmud Torah School (now merged in the United Hebrew Public Schools).
