Wald, Herman


WALD, Herman. Sculptor. Born in Cluj, Klausenberg, Hungary, 7th Ju- ly, 1906, son of Rabbi Jacob and Pearl Wald. Educated in Cluj; then studied Art at Budapest Academy; in Vienna under Prof. Hanak; in Berlin under Prof. Totila. Taught art at the Working Man's College, London. Came to South Africa in 1937 and set up his own studio and school of art in Johannesburg. Has held exhibitions in South Africa and overseas. Executed several public statues, including "Kria" (Monument of Martyred European Jewry) in the grounds of the Witwatersrand Jewish Aged Home, Sandringham; the Johannesburg Memorial to the six million victims of the Nazis, in the West Park Jewish Cemetery; the Oppenheimer Fountain in the centre of Johannesburg; and the Oppenheimer Fountain at the Kimberley Civic Centre. Hon. Teacher of Art at the Jewish Aged Home. During World War II served with the S.A. Forces in the Camouflage Section of the Engineering Corps., with the rank of Sergeant.
