Schauder, Adolph


SCHAUDER, Adolph. J.P. Merchant and Industrialist. Born Kolomya, Austria, 16th December, 1880, son of Mendel and Rosal Schauder. Educated at Baron Hirsch. School, Kolomya, and served apprenticeship in Vienna. Came to South Africa 1899. Enlisted as Medical Orderly with the British Forces in the Anglo-Boer War. After demobilisation entered commerce in Port Elizabeth. Director, A. Schauder & Sons (Pty.) Ltd.. Schauder's Investments (Pty.) Ltd. Early began public work in both Jewish and general communities. First elected to Port Elizabeth City Council, 1923. and re-elected continuously thereafter for an unbroken. period of municipal service of 42 years. Helped organise Mayor's Emergency Fund for Unemployed and Distressed during the Depression, 1930-33. Elected Deputy Mayor, Port Elizabeth, 1938-1940: Mayor, 1940-42. Former chairman of Municipal Housing Committee, Port Elizabeth City Council 30,000 municipal houses for all races built under his auspices). Member of National Housing and Planning Commission for 16 years; Chairman, E.P. and Border Regional Committee of the Commission. Awarded Queen's Coronation Medal 1953 for his public services. Awarded Freedom of the City of Port Elizabeth, 1957. Founder and First President, Midlands Area Development Association. Founder and Chairman, Bantu Benevolent Society (which housed and fed aged, crippled and blind Africans at New Brighton Township). Schauder Township for Coloureds named in his honour. Member, P.E. and District School Board for 29 years. Member, P.E. Harbour Board till 1964. Member of Council, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, 1946-66. Past President. P.E. Orthodox Hebrew Congregation. Founder, P.E. Hebrew School and P.E. Chevra Kadisha, and President of these institutions for many years. Hon. Life President, P.E. Jewish Benevolent Society. Vice- President, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies. Founder and President, Ort-Oze in the Eastern Province. Past District Councillor, S.A. Zionist Federation. During World War II was Chief Area Commandant of Port Elizabeth, and first Chairman of the Governor General's War Fund (Port Elizabeth section). Also organised campaigns for other war funds, Life Vice- President, Cape Province Municipal Association. Awarded Honorary Doctorate in Social Science by Rhodes University, 1967.
