
SICHEL, Frieda Henrietta. Ph.D. (Heidelberg). Social Worker.
Born Kassel, Germany, 15th May, 1889, daughter of Theodor and Fanny Gotthelft.
Educated at Universities of Freiburg, Munich, Berlin and Heidelberg. Came to
South Africa 1935. Research Officer, Immigrants' Research Committee. Formerly
Senior Welfare Officer, Transvaal Jewish Welfare Council, 1947- 1961. Welfare
Officer, Jewish Women's Benevolent and Welfare Society 1943-1956. (Society
named its Frieda Sichel Occupational Centre in her honour). Case Supervisor,
Child Welfare Society, Johannesburg, (1940-43). In Germany was Assistant
Statistician to Director of Statistics, Municipality of Stuttgart, 1915;
Scientific Assistant to the National Council of Women in Berlin and also to the
Minister of the Interior, 1916-17; Co-editor, "Kasseler Tageblatt"
(1918). Co-Founder and Hon. Life President, B'nai B'rith Women's Chapter of
South Africa. Co-Founder and Hon. Life Member, Our Parents' Home. Co-Founder
and Executive member, Johannesburg Co-ordinating Council of Welfare Agencies.
Co-Founder and Executive member, Council for the Care of the Aged. Hon. Life
Member, United Sisterhoods of the United Jewish Reform Congregation of
Johannesburg. Member of the Governing Body of the Transvaal Jewish Welfare
Council. Co-Founder and Executive member of St. Christopher Hostels
Association. Foundation member, Johannesburg Social Workers' Association. Hon.
Welfare Consultant, Union of Jewish Women of S.A., until 1961. Executive
member, Jewish Women's Benevolent and Welfare Society. Publications: "From
Refugee to Citizen" (Cape Town 1966). Married Karl Hermann Sichel, 1918;
